Who do we want to find?
Do you have a passion for the news industry and worldwide information? Would you like to help fight misinformation and have a major say in creating the tools and platforms that will influence news in the future? Join a small, vibrant group of skilled developers that will form the core of Newsmatics, a news technology firm based in Washington, D.C., that specialises in developing news technology platforms.
If you can think critically about projects, take ownership of them, and see them through to completion, we will be delighted to have you join our team. An knowledgeable, diligent person who can communicate in English and work well in a remote setting is our ideal applicant.
What’s in store for you here?
Developing new applications and progressively revamping our flagship product for press release dissemination and its surrounding ecosystem will be your biggest task. You will be able to take part in the design of APIs for different system components (such as payments and authentication), the implementation of these APIs, and the architecture of new apps.
For more than ten years, we have been using Ruby applications in production. We wish to rework some legacy code, and we focus on good code quality and maintainability in all of our new apps. Before being released into production, our code must pass a code review and be tested.
Our stack:
Sinatra (you might see Ramaze in older programs)
Sequel ORM for SQL database operations
Apiary for documentation and design of APIs
RSpec’s automated tests
At the moment, none of our applications use Ruby on Rails.
Our tools and services include:
Git and GitHub (which we use for code reviews and GitHub Actions for continuous integration, in addition to hosting the code itself)
For project management, linear
Sentry for recording errors
Using Sendgrid to send transactional and bulk emails
Smartlook for monitoring user activity
Grafana for corporate intelligence, server monitoring, and much more
We employ a combination of the best relational (MariaDB) and NoSQL (Cassandra) databases, along with a Sphinx full-text index, to cope with the terabytes of valuable data we have. We intend to leverage this massive amount of data for data research and LLM training, moving from Cassandra to Aurora and from Sphinx to Manticore.
What we provide:
Completely remote working setup
Open and welcoming setting where Slack and Google Meet are the main tools used for communication
Collaboration on significant international news technology initiatives
An multinational group of passionate experts who can truly excel on assignments
Developing skills through code reviews and team knowledge sharing
Agile software development in two weeks
A bit more about ourselves
Our team is made up of a diverse group of bright people from all over the world who are committed to filling local news voids and enhancing transparency and clarity in news content. Advertising is not a significant source of income for us. We work on advanced intelligence software tools, media monitoring, and specialised media analysis.
